Nina Simone’s Gum
2021

This oddball memoir-of-sorts tracks the story of musician Warren Ellis who, following Nina Simone’s final UK concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 2013, crept onstage to retrieve a piece of gum the singer stuck under the grand piano before starting the show, then put it in a carrier back and forgot about it. Seven years later the gum was displayed on a plinth in an exhibition curated by Ellis’s friend Nick Cave, then cast to make a set of handmade jewellery and other talismanic monuments.

I didn't design the dust jacket of the main edition, but did so for an booklet that accompanied a special edition, depicting a detail of the jewellery maker’s scratched silver work surface.
